3 Simple Security Steps for Windows Based Computers

1. Have an active Internet Security product with the latest definitions
At PC Sense we use and recommend AVG Internet Security. Almost daily we have systems brought in that have other antivirus programs, when we use AVG it will eliminate 10 to 20 running viruses that Norton/Symantec couldn't detect. To find more information about AVG click here.

2. Keep your computer updated with Windows Update.
One of the most effective ways to spread a virus is by exploiting security holes in the Microsoft Windows operating system, To cure the problem Microsoft is constantly releasing updates to block the security hole within Windows and if you don't have the latest patch, you're at risk for infection.
When running Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 2000 Professional you can use Automatic Updates. Click "Start", Click "Control Panel", Click "Security Center", Click the "Automatic Updates" button. Make sure to set the time for the updates to install at a time where your computer is on, failure to do so will not allow your computer to install the required updates.

3. Use an alternative web browser besides Internet Explorer
Most people that use Windows XP or Windows Vista use Internet Explorer 6/7 and while it may be integrated with Windows it is still not recommended. A good alternative browser is Mozilla's latest version of Firefox. It is quicker and safer than Internet Explorer and has won several awards for being more secure.
